Bathing Assistance: The Heaviest Burden for Domestic Helpers
Bathing an elderly person with limited mobility often involves frequent lifting and supporting. For domestic helpers, who are typically smaller in build, this is not only extremely physically demanding but also a common cause of back strain, and even a reason some are unable to continue and leave their contracts early.
This trend is expected to continue: the Census and Statistics Department projects that Hong Kong’s elderly population (aged 65+) will roughly double from about 1.1 million in 2016 to 2.3 million by 2034, representing 30% of the population. In other words, more and more domestic helpers will be assigned to care for frail elderly family members over the next decade.
Assisting elderly bathing is officially recognised as a specialised skill, not a task that can simply be figured out. The Social Welfare Department has run the “Pilot Training Programme on Elderly Care for Foreign Domestic Helpers” since 2018, expanded to all 18 districts in October 2023, with nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists as instructors.
Among the programme’s 12 hours of core compulsory modules, “assisting elderly bathing” is explicitly listed as one of 8 core subjects, alongside “fall prevention and first aid” and “feeding and medication assistance”.
Even the government runs a dedicated course inviting physiotherapists to teach helpers how to safely assist with elderly bathing — this is not a simple household chore, but a task with real physical and skill requirements. For employment agencies, this is one of the most common friction points when matching clients (employers) with helpers caring for elderly family members.

This is also why the Social Welfare Department’s training programme specifically lists “assisting elderly persons with mild mobility impairment to transfer” and “assisting elderly bathing” as compulsory core subjects, the government itself recognises that these two tasks carry a genuine skill and risk threshold requiring formal training.

If a helper doesn’t speak Chinese or English at all, can she still learn to use this machine?

The manufacturer’s warranty covers natural wear and mechanical faults. Damage caused by accidental impact or failure to follow instructions is not covered and would require a separate repair quotation.
If an employer is interested, does the agency need to handle stock and delivery?
No. The agency only needs to give the employer a dedicated referral link or code, payment, delivery, and product training are all handled directly by the BNET-TECH team.
